ZIMSAT-2, Zimbabwe's second satellite, was launched successfully. The nation's space program has advanced significantly with this event. The Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia hosted the launch, which came after Zimbabwe's first satellite, ZimSat-1, was launched in November 2022.
Zimbabwe's launch of ZIMSAT-2
- ZIMSAT-2 is one of the little low Earth observation satellites that was launched by the Zimbabwe National Geo-Spatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA) in conjunction with Southwest State University in Russia.
- Carrying a high-resolution multispectral wide-area camera, it can be used in agriculture, exploration, and environmental sciences.
- Subsequent outcome validated by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development.
- The satellite is expected to boost up agricultural operations, help in successive environmental surveillance, and facilitate disaster management and resource mapping.
- This innovation has also led to the capacity development of the engineers of Zimbabwe as they participate in the development of ZIMSAT2.
- ZINGSA Coordinator Dr. Painos Gweme continued with reasoning that economics would embrace the satellite, especially in the areas of agriculture and mining.
- The successful launching can give political impetus for future space exploration projects in Zimbabwe and improve Zimbabwe’s satellite development and application.
