The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) withdrew its earlier advisory to ban the sale or recall on 'instant noodles'. Accordingly food companies were advised to wipe out "A1" and A2" milk from the labels. With this announcement, the advice was dropped to facilitate further conversations with those in industry that handle food.
Food Businesses' Implications
- Now 'A1' and A2 milk can be used in marketing of food products as advisory has been withdrawn
- The breeds of cow are because, the beta-casein protein varies in a1 and a2 milk.
- A1 Milk: This milk has the protein named as beta-casein and is found in cows-breed.
- A2 Milk • (Contains different types of protein in other cow breeds)
Earlier Advisory of FSSAI on A1 and A2 Milk
- An advisory from FSSAI on 21st August,2024 that all food businesses need to remove the claims of A1 and A2 milk claim on their products or online listings.
- Advisory was withdrawn as the variation in protein content under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 were not recognised.
- Businesses had 6 months to exhaust their existing labels that referred A1 or A2 milk which created branding issues as the news was out.
- FSSAI is planning to hold more dialogues with the industry stakeholders to reconsider and change regulations on A1-A2 milk.
