Researchers Discover Dances Girls — a New Species of Ginger From India

Three new species of Introseris, a type of ginger, have been found in Eastern India, particularly within Mizoram and Meghalaya by researchers from the Bhopal-based Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER). All these new varieties are known as the dancing girls ginger type as for its different blossoms characteristics.Scientists Ritu Yadav and Vinita Gowda came across the finding while doing field research. The work is important because it expands our horizons regarding the botanical diversity of these regions.

Newly Found Ginger Variety in India

  • Globba genus of Zingiberaceae ginger family has three new species, namely Globba tyrnaensis,Globba Janakiae, and Globba Yadaviana.
  • Globba tyrnaensis: Known from the forest floor of Double Decker Living Root Bridge area at an altitude of 731 meters in Meghalaya.
  • Found in Meghalaya: Globba janakiae named after Dr. E.K.Janaki Ammal
  • Globba Yadaviana was found while heading towards Reiek Tlang Road in Mizoram.
  • Floral traits and habitat are species specific.
  • Conservation is important because these species are rare.
  • It throws up the necessity of biodiversity research in India
