2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Demis Hassabis

Three scientists' ground-breaking research on proteins has earned them the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Artificial intelligence (AI) has been used by Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper of Google DeepMind to predict the three-dimensional (3D) structures of almost every known protein. David Baker of the University of Washington receives recognition for creating entirely novel proteins that are not found in nature.

AI's Role in Protein Research

  • HProtein folding prediction from amino acid sequence using an AI model called AlphaFold2 developed by Hassabis and Jumper.
  • AlphaFold2, trained on known sequences and structures to learn how to sequence/structure patterns of proteins it had never seen
  • Over two million scientists worldwide were utilizing AlphaFold2 by October 2024, advancing the understanding of proteins and assisting in advances in medicine, agriculture, and environmental science.
  • Using computational tools David Baker designed new proteins with novel functions (Top7) for nanotechnology, medicine and sustainable industrial processes.
  • New medicines for novel diseases, protecting the environment and then also new materials for entire industries through better understanding where we design proteins.
