India commissions anti-submarine warfare ships Malpe and Mulki

Mantra- Malpe & Mulki (New ships of the Indian Navy) It is the fourth and fifth craft of an eight-ship program to build Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC). This launch of an Indian shipyard in Kochi, at Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL), is an important move toward India's target of enhancing its defense industrial base.

Launch of Mahe Class warship in India

  • Launched by Mrs. Vijaya Srinivas and Vice Admiral V Srinivas.
  • Named after the most important seas of the country’s coast.
  • Part of India’s quest to modernize its navy and strengthen its defense mechanisms against enemies.

Contract and Development

  • The Ministry of Defense contracted Cochin Shipyard Ltd for eight ships.
  • The contract seeks to boost domestic capacity into shipbuilding in India.

Technological Features

  • Developed with sophisticated technology, mainly in India.
  • The underwater sensors are specially designed to detect submarines.
  • Best suited for anti-submarine missions in shallow coastal waters.
  • Can move up to 25 knots and travel 1,800 nautical miles.
  • Over 80% of the material used technology used.
