Pune Forest Department Conservation Initiative

A significant conservation initiative has been started by the Pune Forest Department. Wolf, jackal, fox, civet, and hyena are the five wild animal species that are the subject of this study. The name "Mizo-Carnivorous" refers to all of these animals. The chief wildlife warden is presently reviewing the request, which has been filed for approval.

Conservation of Wildlife in Pune
Reasons for Conservation

  • Animals face health threats from unhygienic conditions, food pollution, hotel waste, habitat destruction, and human encroachment.
  • The wildlife wing has identified five species as urgent priorities for conservation.

Project Phases

  • The data collection phase involves assessing species population and mapping habitats.
  • The threat analysis phase focuses on identifying challenges and developing mitigation measures.

Current Threats

  • Habitat destruction from agricultural expansion and infrastructure projects disrupts natural habitats.
  • Conflicts with stray dogs lead to hybridization and population decline.
  • Wolves are the most endangered species, and the Pune Forest Department proposes a wolf breeding center to boost their population.

Broader Wildlife Concerns

  • Leopards are increasing in new areas, causing crop and cattle damage.

  • A study is planned to understand territorial expansion of leopards and implement early intervention measures.
