Thottiyar Hydroelectric Project Launch

On October 28, 2024, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is scheduled to officially launch the Thottiyar Hydroelectric project in Idukki. The effective utilization of water in the production of electricity makes this 40 MW facility notable. Officials estimate that 99 million units of power will be produced annually.

A brief look at the Thottiyar Hydroelectric Project

• Trial production is 173 million units, generating low water usage as evidenced by the numbers.
• The scheme uses two generators: specifically of 10 MW and 30 MW, respectively.
• The project draws water from the Deviyar stream associated with the Periyar River. These are check dams, canals, and tunnels.
• The penstock pipes transfer water to turbines; in the company’s case, they power vertical turbines in the powerhouse.
• The investment cost of the project is ?188 crore.
• The smmultiphase inauguration will be done at Lower Periyar and would include the officials of the project.
