Novel Wetland Virus

Also in China, scientists have identified a new virus called the Wetland Virus that infects people through bites of ticks. They are concerned about the possibility this could have serious impacts on human health because it can, and does in other mammals result in significant neurological (brain-related) issues.

First Case of Wetland Virus Found

  • First case detected in a northern Chinese wetland park on June 10, 2019
  • Othornairovirus, usually contracted via a bite from a tick.
  • Symptoms: Fever, dizziness, headache, fatigue, joint pain or back pain and nausea.
  • Virus can hurt brain tissue, blood clot formalized.
  • In animals including sheep, horses, pigs and even rodents; warning of wider wildlife spread.
  • All the patients with infections had recovered within 4 to 15 days, raising hopes for virus control.
  • The finding highlights a reminder about the potential magnitude of tick-borne diseases.
