Exostoma Sentiyonoae, a New Catfish Species Found in Nagaland

A new species of catfish known as Exostoma sentiyonoae has been discovered in Dzuleke River, Nagaland, India The river is part of the Barak River system and what makes it an important finding is that there were so many fishes found in its water.

New Loach Species Discovered in River of Nagaland

  • The findings were published in Zootaxa by Bungdon Shangningam from the Zoological Survey of India and Limatemjen from Kohima Science College.
  • Length of newly discovered catfish, a type specimen cataloged holotype ZSI FF 9871 is 75.8 mm
  • Unique features include an adipose fin connected to its upper caudal-fin rays, tubercles on its dorsal fin spine, a slender head, a large distance between the dorsal fin and adipose fin, small eyes, and 41 vertebrae.
  • Taxonomic differences include shorter dorsal-fin base, longer distance between dorsal and adipose fins, smaller eyes, shorter distance between pectoral and pelvic fins, wider head, deeper caudal peduncle, and longer dorsal-adipose fin distance and shorter anal-fin base.
  • The discovery is the first of a member of the Exostoma genus to be found in the Dzuleke River.
  • Future research directions include more surveys, genetic studies, investigation of species distribution and interaction, and development of conservation plans.
