Pakistan Inter-Services Intelligence Director General Appointed

Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum has been replaced as the Director General of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) by Lt. Gen. Muhammad Asim Malik. This shift occurs at a time when political instability and security threats are becoming more prevalent in Pakistan, especially as a result of tensions from supporters of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Service and Portfolio of Lt. Gen Malik

  • Lt General Malik, 59, hails from a family of soldiers- his father was in the Army.
  • He is an alumnus of the University of Balochistan, and University College London, earning 'Sword of Honour' during his military training at Pakistan Military Academy.
  • He commanded Balochistan infantry division and led operations in Waziristan.
  • Dr Faiqual Ahmed, who is a PhD in U.S.- Pakistan relations and the most academic powerful ISI chief ever.
  • Military has a say in appointment <- Final decision is made based on political considerations.
  • Lt. Gen Malik has a difficult few weeks ahead with the current power play between Pakistan's military and government
  • The job of the ISI chief is to oversee Pakistan's foreign policy, counter-terrorism efforts and manage relations with Afghanistan.
