New Turmeric Cousin Found in Ungma Village, Nagaland!

The new plant was found during a field survey in Nagaland and an extensive search revealed that it belonged to the turmeric family. This most recent species, which is described in the scientific journal Phytotaxa, goes by the name Curcuma ungmensis. It was discovered near the hamlet of Ungma.

Taxonomy and Family

  • Curcuma ungmensis – This species belongs to the ginger family Zingiberaceae and native to south and southeast Asia.
  • The researchers found the new species after conducting a comprehensive survey of all known Curcuma species growing in this area.
