Philippines and Vietnam Strengthen Defense Ties

Maritime security is a field where the Philippines and Vietnam have decided to intensify their cooperation, including in defense. The agreement was forged when Phan Van Giang, Vietnamese minister of defense, visited the Philippines. In regards to the transnational issues in South China Sea, this patnerhsip plans to address the expanding problem existing with China.

Gone are the Key Agreements and Tensions of Vietnam with The Philippines

  • The two countries agreed on 'letters of intent' to improve maritime security & disaster response.
  • A formal security agreement by the end of the year, underscoring a commitment to peaceful solutions and respect for international law.
  • The deal is only seen as a minor symbolic move and is not expected to drastically tip military power.
  • South China Sea Dispute: China in possession of South China Sea and thus wants to control its strategic shipping route as well as natural resource rich area.
  • Since 2016,a Chinese Court Rule, however not agreed by China
  • The Philippines and China are both trying to lower the fence, but tensions remain high.
  • Experts say smaller groups of partners with common interests, such as Vietnam and the Philippines could collaborate more efficiently than all members of the ASEAN group.
  • Vietnam has managed its behaviour better, going back to 2011 when there were good reasons for escalation but Hanoi did not do what Manila has.
  • The deals are an acknowledgment of the mutual interest to come closer, which could help stabilize and secure the region.
