The third MAHASAGAR was held at the Indian Navy. Several important maritime officials from the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) participated in this high-level virtual meeting. Talks with representatives from countries including Bangladesh, the Maldives, and Kenya were facilitated by Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi.
MAHASAGAR Initiative Overview
- MAHASAGAR The Hindi word for ‘vast ocean’ is India’s navy’s flagship effort for maritime discourse.
- It was initiated in 2023 as a vision of Active Security and Growth for All in the region of the Indian Ocean.
- The program has the following theme: “Training cooperation to address frequently experienced maritime security concerns in IOR.”.
- Another important cooperation area must be training cooperation, because joint training between naval forces will effectively improve the overall level of readiness and capacities.
- Member countries are Bangladesh, Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania.
- The main areas of concern consist of such topics as improving the quality of training, defining the plans of joint training and common resources, forming human capital, and analyzing maritime security threats.
- MAHASAGAR is also used as a working-level setting that builds confidence between participating navies in the region.
- Possibilities of success result in increased cooperation, more effective exchange of resources, and increased naval security in the Southeast Asia zone.
