Forever Chemicals Found in Drinking Water

According to a new research, drinking water across the globe contains harmful "Forever Chemicals." These compounds, called perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), have been found in bottled and tap water in major Chinese and UK cities. The results were reported in ACS ES&T Water by researchers from Hainan University and the University of Birmingham.

An Examination of PFAS in Drinking Water

  • PFAS are man-made chemicals found in non-stick pots and pans, water-resistant clothing, and fabric that can resist stains.
  • PFAS exposure is associated with health effects including impaired immune function, liver damage, reduced birth weight and elevated cancer risk.
  • Over 99% of bottled water samples contained either PFOA or PFOS in a study of153 water samples.
  • Concentrations in bottled water also differed, lower concentrations in purified water than in natural mineral water.
  • While there are health advisory levels set for PFAS in drinking water by regulatory agencies, these were much higher than tap water levels in China.
  • PFAS filters use carbon to treat drinking water, boil water.
  • Consumers are now looking for better water treatment options. They will demand more from their suppliers and regulators will likely respond with tougher legislation.
  • The study highlights the importance of continued investigation into PFAS and approaches to reduce PFAS contamination in drinking water sources.
