WHO Receives $700M New Funding Pledges for 2025-2028 Budget

The World Health Organization (WHO) stated at a Berlin event that it has secured additional financial commitments totaling $700 million for its 2025-2028 budget. This is on top of the $300 million that the African and European Unions have already committed to.

The Importance of Funding for the WHO and Its Changes

  • Investments in health systems are investments in public health, and contribute towards stable societies and a stable economy: WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
  • Germany, together with the United States, collectively contributed a minimum of 360 million euros ($392 million).
  • WHO aims to have 50% of its budget derived from mandatory charging by member states by 2030-2031
  • Even small donations can "make a real difference", said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, urging other countries to help bolster WHO as global health programmes cannot succeed in the long term without the organisation.
  • Found in 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) is made up of 194 country members.
  • Flagship initiatives, namely the Global Vaccine Action Plan and Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
