The Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) recently reported the completion of successful testing on the Zorawar light tank. The tank scores hugely in India's quest for self-reliance in military technology as it is built to operate on high-altitude locations.
Zorawar Light Tank Overview
- Designed & developed by Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE), in association with Larsen & Toubro Limited
- Initial practice showed that the tank could work in harsh conditions, e.g., deserts;
- Inclusion of Indian industry, particularly the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the development process.
- The testing is for carrying India to improve its self-reliance in defense systems and also address security challenges of the region.
- The Indian Army had ordered 350 light tanks weighing below 25 tonnes to bolster its agility and fire-power in high-altitude areas by 2021.
- The shortage of light tanks has been exacerbated by the situation on the India-China border in Eastern Ladakh.
