Indian Light Tank Zorawar Successfully Tested by DRDO

The Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) recently reported the completion of successful testing on the Zorawar light tank. The tank scores hugely in India's quest for self-reliance in military technology as it is built to operate on high-altitude locations.

Zorawar Light Tank Overview

  • Designed & developed by Combat Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE), in association with Larsen & Toubro Limited
  • Initial practice showed that the tank could work in harsh conditions, e.g., deserts;
  • Inclusion of Indian industry, particularly the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the development process.
  • The testing is for carrying India to improve its self-reliance in defense systems and also address security challenges of the region.
  • The Indian Army had ordered 350 light tanks weighing below 25 tonnes to bolster its agility and fire-power in high-altitude areas by 2021.
  • The shortage of light tanks has been exacerbated by the situation on the India-China border in Eastern Ladakh.
