The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has launched an ambitious National Electricity Plan (Transmission). It aims to dramatically increase the ability in India for renewable energy. It targets over 600 gigawatts of renewable power capacity by 2032 and 500 GW (gigawatts) by the year 2030. On 14–15th October, 2024, Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal announced this concept in New Delhi.
Goals of the Plan and Infrastructure Development
- Deploy more renewable energy: More than 600 GW of deployable renewable energy by 2032.
- Plan energy savings devices — 47 GW Battery Energy Storage Systems and 31 Gwn Pumped Energy Plants
- Enhancing power transmission and renewable energy integration: Supply of renewable electricity to the regions of Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia production.
- Pixel pipe: 2,91,000 circuit kilometers of transmission lines by 2031-42; development of transformation capacity – 1270 GVA; plan for 33 GW HVDC bi-pole links
- Inter-regional transmission expansion — a growth from 119 GW to 168 GW by the year 2032.
- Enhance cross-border connections: Strengthen interconnections with neighbouring countries and Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
- Adopt technological innovations: Hybrid Substations, Monopole Structures, Insulated Cross Arms Dynamic Line Rating High-Performance Conductors Higher voltage levels
- Present vast investment prospects: By 2032, it is likely to draw over INR 9,15,000 Crores (~$110 billion) in transmission sector investments.
