Nagar Van Yojana Creates 111 Urban Forests, Above Target

The Indian government started the Nagar Van Yojana (NVY) in 2020 to improve the quantity of green space in cities. The government's goal with this new effort was to establish 100 urban woods, or Nagar Vans, in the first 100 days. With 111 Nagar Vans sanctioned throughout 6 states and 1 union territory, this goal was accomplished.

Aim of Nagar Van Yojana (NVY) and funding

  • NVY is established with the goal of improving urban quality via garden spaces specifically meant to provide relaxation, education and environmental benefits.
  • The government gives Rs 4 lakh per hectare on creating and protecting the Nagar Vans between 10 to 50 hectares.
  • It aims to enhance biodiversity by planting different types of trees like fruit-bearing, medicinal and native.
  • No more than one-third of the area where urban forests are established would be used up by non-trees, and engagement with local communities is necessary.
  • Nagar Vans comprising Biodiversity Parks, Smriti Van, Butterfly Conservatories, Herbal Gardens and Matri Vans.
  • By 2027, the government plans to develop1000 Nagar Vans across India supported by Central Compensatory Afforestation Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA).
