All about Ex Varuna: Aim, Importance and Participants
Objective:
- To enhance interoperability between Indian and French navies by practicing advance tactical drills.
- Employ sophisticated naval maneuvers to improve co-ordination.
Historical Significance:
- First Indian Navy aircraft to operate out of a French Airbase in 63 years
- Stresses on the robust maritime ties between India and France.
P8i Poseidon Aircraft:
- Specifically for ASW and patrol duties.
- Built by Boeing Defence and has flown over 35,000 hours.
- Critical in maritime surveillance, submarine combat and search-and-rescue operations.
Indian Navy's Participation:
- INS Tabar of the Indian Navy also took part in Varuna exercise
History of Exercise Varuna:
- Began 1993, officially known as Varuna (2001).
- Features a menu of naval assets from both nations.
