All about Ex Varuna: Aim, Importance and Participants

Objective:

  • To enhance interoperability between Indian and French navies by practicing advance tactical drills.
  • Employ sophisticated naval maneuvers to improve co-ordination.

Historical Significance:

  • First Indian Navy aircraft to operate out of a French Airbase in 63 years
  • Stresses on the robust maritime ties between India and France.

P8i Poseidon Aircraft:

  • Specifically for ASW and patrol duties.
  • Built by Boeing Defence and has flown over 35,000 hours.
  • Critical in maritime surveillance, submarine combat and search-and-rescue operations.

Indian Navy's Participation:

  • INS Tabar of the Indian Navy also took part in Varuna exercise

History of Exercise Varuna:

  • Began 1993, officially known as Varuna (2001).
  • Features a menu of naval assets from both nations.
