Recent research has added a wrinkle of worry about the near-Earth asteroid 99942 Apophis, which was before believed to have only an unlikely chance of hitting our home world. Canadian astronomer Paul Wiegert's findings offer a new element that could alter the object's path.
I have 99942 Apophis: A Large Asteroid Defies Religions.
- 99942 Apophis: An asteroid big and close with a size of about 1,210 feet across with earth. It was found in 2004. The first thing scanning experts noticed was when they determined a 2.7% chance it might hit Earth.
- Apophis's course could be altered by a collision with another, smaller space object, research carried out by Canadian astronomer Paul Wiegert has suggested. However, more detailed studies have found the probability for an effect to be tiny.
- The chances of Apophis hitting with Earth remain under 1 in 2 billion, but getting hit by a different thing and after that hitting Earth is around 1 in 100 million.
- Apophis has not been closely watched since May 2021 because of its difficult perspective position; a clearer view is expected in 2027. Although a miniscule risk, Apophis still needs to be watched closely by scientists as well as further study in efforts of preparing for any potential future hazard.
