16th BRICS Summit in Kazan

The invitation to go to Russia on October 22–23 came when Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with President Vladimir Putin over the telephone. It will be Modi's second trip to Russia in 2023 after a previous trip -- also for the for BRICS summit -- taking place in July in Moscow.

BRICS Summit Overview

• The BRICS Summit is a stratified summit within each of the five continents in the world (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa grouped).
• Adding to this list are Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the UAE
• It is a summit for Russia–China relations, cooperation, and development of the world and security.

Modi's Visit to the Summit

• Modi to meet leaders of BRICS grouping, Possibly meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping
• The summit is centred on multilateralism, financial and political objectives and strategic planning.

About the BRICS Summit

• The summit, which began in 2009, comprises around 42% of the global populace and 23% of the world economy
• Jim O'Neill coined the label "BRICS" in 2001 for the world economy.
