India Joins 44th Codex Committee Meeting on Nutrition and Special Diets

India participated in the 44th meeting of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU), which was held from October 2–6, 2024, in Dresden, Germany. India provided significant insights on nutrition, dietary requirements, and food safety at this summit. The session's main goal was to update outdated recommendations on probiotics and young children's nutritional reference values.

International Food Safety and Consumer Health Landscape: India's Role

  • Suggested nutrient reference value for children 6-36 mo, averaged nutrient requirements of 2 sub-groups
  • Suggested updating obsolete FAO/WHO probiotic guidelines from 2001 and 2002.
  • Canada, Chile and New Zealand supported India on international platform.
  • Sensory testing in followup formulas (opposed; postponed pending review — No scientific basis)
  • Indian Delegation was able to influence the discussions on promoting food safety and consumer health.
  • WHO/FAO: Joint Statement on Principles of Healthy Diets Announcement, and Alternative Animal Source Foods Update
  • CCNFSDU (Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses), created in 1966, provides guidance on specific food types, focusing on populations with special dietary needs.
