China, India pledge to maintain peace on border

China and India have agreed to cooperate in order to maintain peace on their joint border, especially in the Ladakh region where tensions have been very high. This understanding area emerged during the 31st meeting of Working Mechanism for Consultation & Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) in Beijing.

India and China: Border Agreements & WMCC Meeting

Historical Agreements:

  • Agreement of 1993, First peace and tranquility plan.
  • 1996 Agreement = More securitization
  • 2003 and 2005: following agreements to further cooperation and communication in prevention efforts.

WMCC Meeting Significance:

  • Argues for greater peace to improve India-China relations.
  • Objectives: Restoration of peace and respect for the border.

Diplomatic Engagements:

  • Aftercontacts between India's foreign minister S. Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in July 2024
  • This would work to expedite border-related problems and better communication between diplomats and defence personnel.

Necessary Steps for Problem Solving

  • Get the levels of communication up through diplomatic and military channels to sort out remainder border disputes.

WMCC:

  • Founded in 2012 to deal with border issue and reinforce communication.
  • Border management, confidence-building and border dispute resolution.
