To establish Bihar's second tiger reserve in Kaimur district, the national government has temporarily approved the plan. The state government of Bihar made a recommendation that led to this decision, which aims to improve wildlife conservation in the region.
Proposal and approval process for Kaimur tiger reserve
- Bihar Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Prem Kumar then on October 8, 2024, stated that Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary (KWLS) will be notified as a tiger reserve.
- The decision was sanctioned by a technical committee and the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
- To cater for the increasing tiger numbers and to help maintain the ecological balance.
- Alpha male tigers from the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) will have to be moved across the border to the new Kaimur Tiger Reserve to guarantee a sustainable population
- There are some 900 square kilometers that were proposed to be part of the reserve, however, the NTCA brought objections that required the reserve to be trimmed down to about 450 square kilometers.
- The reserve's ecological importance is significant, with its forests covering 1,134 square kilometers and having the highest green cover in Bihar at 34%
- It is a part of the Kaimur Range and is famous for its waterfalls.
