VINETRA Kalvari Submarine Escape Training Facility

Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, AVSM, VSM Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) Eastern Naval Command inaugurated the Vinetra — Kalvari Submarine Escape Training Facility at INS Satavahana on 13 September 2024 This is being seen as a major boost up move by the Indian navy to overcome submarine crisis situations.

Vinetra Training Facility’s model for Kalvari-Class Submarine

  • Developed for training the crew of Kalvari class submarines to escape in emergencies.
  • An essential element of the Indian Government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat drive, specifically with reference to defence tech.
  • Five-meter-high escape tower and diving basin for simulated underwater escapes.
  • Seeks to improve submariners' preparations for emergencies and boost the operational readiness and safety of submarines.

INS Satavahana

  • Lead ship of its class commissioned in 1988
  • Served the Indian Navy as a training ship.
  • Participated in naval drills to improve teamwork and coordination
  • Named after the Satavahana dynasty, depicting Indias rich history as a maritime nation and its modern naval potential.
