The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in Japan has elected Shigeru Ishiba as its new leader. Fumio Kishida resigned because of economic issues and corruption accusations. With nine contenders, the election was unique. After no candidate received a majority in the first round, Ishiba defeated Sanae Takaichi in a narrow runoff, winning 215 votes to her 194. Instead of holding a public election, the LDP chooses its leaders via internal vote. Ishiba may ask for early elections to increase his public support, while general elections are almost a year away.
