DST Launches Women In Space Leadership Program

Developed under the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Minister for human Resource Development, India, Mr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank today inaugurated Women in Space Leadership Programme(WiSLP). The aim of this initiative is to introduce a more female-friendly environment in the conduct of scientific research and innovation, which subsequently may lead them stepping up for leadership roles on space science arena.

WiSLP: Aim and Objectives

  • Encourages leadership among women doing space sciences.
  • Collaborates with Coventry University for rolling out activities and attracting participants.
  • Noted experts like Vandana Singh and Michael Houlgate (above) talk about the relevance of the program
  • Seeks to foster a network of 250 early-career researchers, helping them navigate gender obstacles in the research arena and develop peer communities.
  • Workshops to promote gender equality in space sciences.
  • Overcoming initial resistance, it has established not only a successful mentoring program but pathways to long-term skill development within gender specializations in astrophysics and telecommunications.
  • Specialist, Prof Annapurni Subramaniyam urges more women to start their careers in space science at the early stage.
