Taiwan Receives US-Shipped Harpoon Anti-Ship Missile Systems

The United States has sent 100 land-based Harpoon anti-ship missile systems to Taiwan for the first time; the cargo landed at Kaohsiung Port on September 27. In times of regional tension, this is a critical step in bolstering Taiwan's military.

  • The delivery begins a long-expected overhaul of Taiwan's national defense capabilities.
  • A part of a big package deal that the US approved in 2020
  • The agreement involves 400 RTM-84L-4 Harpoon Block II missiles, four special maneuverable missile variants, and a hundred launch trucks as well as twenty-five radar vehicles. 
  • The delivery will be carried out in 2 phases: Phase One by year of 2026 (128 missiles) and phase Two before the end the year of two thousand twenty eight.
  • The delivery reinforces Taiwan's capabilities to ward off naval threats and highlights the U.S. commitment to security in the Indo-Pacific region, Christopher said
