India 23rd Law Commission

Under the Chair of President Droupadi Murmu, approved to set up 23rd Law Commission of India. The commission will serve from September 1, 2024 until August 31, 2027. The decision comes as the term of office in 22nd Law Commission expired and there was no chairman, which had led to a delay in submitting some pending reports.

Structure and Functions of 23rd Law Commission

  • The Commission will be comprised of four full-time members, two ex-officio members and up to five part-time members.
  • Objective: Review Indian legal system for improvement
  • The 22nd Law Commission ran into troubled waters when its Chairman quit, hitting the headlines for all the wrong reasons and eclipsing any progress it might have made on critical issues.
  • Nationwide Special Law Review to fulfill objectives such as-identifying & repealing outdated laws, impact assessment of laws on the poor; improving judicial administration; harmonizing existing legislation with Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP); promoting gender justice-majority woman judges required for equality application in private matters too-simplify Central Acts—provisions impacting common man should be translated into 8 regional languages-enquire after legal questions referred by governments-provide international research support-address globalization's effects upon social values
  • Amendments: Other provisions (such as those related to prior recommendation, documentation in Hindi and English) Legal Research Education_TRAINING initiatives
