Plan — New Delhi: With tobacco consumption among the youth going up, a high-level group has suggested major steps to ensure that educational institutions across India have no smoking zones. This project, which falls under Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) of 2003, aims to keep children and youth away from tobacco addckejuveniles.
Youth in India Launch National survey of youth tobacco trends and ToFEI manual
- JULY 2020: Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) 2019 reports a prevalence rate of tobacco use among school students in India.
- More than 5,500 kids start smoking every day, and 55% of smokers begin before their teen years.
- ToFEI Manual provides information on how to increase knowledge, create quit help and make a tobacco-free environment.
- Government asked schools, colleges and universities to utilize this manual ToFEI
- Instructs the Ministry of Education, in coordination with MOHFW to prevent tobacco use by youth and safeguard health.
- The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) established in 2003 is legislation to control tobacco use that prohibits smoking in public places, restricts advertising of tobacco products.
- These rules are enforced by state governments and public health campaigns that teach people to stop smoking.
