New methods for treating eye conditions including diabetic retinopathy and retinal tears have been created by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. In India, around 11 million individuals suffer from these eye disorders. Mild laser-induced convection, which speeds up and improves the effectiveness of therapy delivery to the retina, is used in this study.
Research on a new method to use laser heat therapy for retinal applications
- More than 10 years of research by Arunn Narasimhan, a professor and Dr. Lingam Gopal an Eye Consultant
- The study seeks to understand how laser-delivered heat penetrates the retina for mediating medication delivery.
- Researchers say carefully applying a little warmth to the eyes can help get medications delivered directly onto retinas more effectively.
- The method has been tried using a glass human eye model trial and time reduced from 12 hours to just in few minutes.
- The gradual heating method can help cure a wide range of retinal diseases and is safe.
- Published: Research Article in Wiley Heat Transfer Journal; will be presented at Conference of ICCHMT
- Retinal disorders target the retina by creating blind spots, flashes and floating shapes within our vision.
