Coelogyne tripurensis Discovered in Tripura Jampui Hills

Coelogyne tripurensis, a new species of orchid, has been found in Tripura's Jampui Hills. At an elevation of 3000 feet, this region is the state's highest hill range and is around 200 kilometers from Agartala. Arjun Adit and Pankaj Kumar carried out the study, which was then published in the journal Phytotaxa.

Found on Jampui Hills, Coelogyne tripurensis

  • Jampui Hills (JH) is situated at the western periphery of the Indo-Myanmar Biodiversity Hotspot having a high diversity.
  • Field visits were made by the research team from 2017 to 2022 as a part of orchid bio-inventory survey in Tripura sadivision and related areas.
  • Coelogyne tripurensis (Orchidaceae), an epiphytic orchid species, family Coelogyne tropical genus, native from the Indian subcontinent to South-West Pacific Islands.
  • The species is classified in the section Fuliginosae which is characterized by its brightly colored flowers as well as this unique form of escape with enclosing glumes.
  • The high phenotypic plasticity makes it very hard to classify them in orchids as could be seen from this section that is highlighted out in the paper.
  • Collection of one specimen of Coelogyne tripurensis which is threatened.
  • A key for the identification of Fuliginosae section species was constructed and offers a dichotomous approach to species recognition based on easily observed morphological characters.
