Telangana Police Launch ‘Operation Crackdown’ to Tackle Cybercrime Networks

TGCSB Targets Mule Bank Accounts in Statewide Anti-Fraud Drive

The Telangana Police has initiated “Operation Crackdown”, a statewide enforcement campaign to dismantle organised cybercrime syndicates and curb digital financial fraud. The drive is being led by the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) in collaboration with district police units and commissionerates.

The operation will unfold in multiple phases, with the first stage focusing on identifying and verifying mule bank accounts used to route fraudulently obtained funds.

Targeting Mule Account Networks

According to TGCSB analysis, 4,775 mule accounts were active in Telangana during 2025. In Phase I, authorities shortlisted 1,888 suspected accounts spread across 137 bank branches in 16 districts. These accounts are linked to 9,431 cybercrime cases nationwide, including 782 within Telangana.

To conduct coordinated inspections, 137 police teams comprising 512 personnel were deployed simultaneously. Investigations include scrutiny of KYC documentation, transaction histories and account-opening procedures.

Emerging Irregularities

Preliminary findings indicate that some branches maintain unusually high concentrations of suspected mule accounts, raising concerns about possible collusion or negligence. Organised intermediaries allegedly facilitated large-scale account openings.

In Hyderabad’s Sultan Bazaar area, one account was reportedly connected to 496 complaints. In Suryapet district, four branches were found associated with 298 cyber-linked accounts.

Financial System Vulnerabilities

Authorities observed that certain smaller banks lacking independent RTGS infrastructure routed high-value transfers through larger national banks, sometimes without stringent verification. Such systemic gaps have been exploited to move illicit funds across jurisdictions.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Mule accounts are used to transfer illegally obtained funds.

  • KYC norms are mandated under RBI regulatory guidelines.

  • RTGS enables real-time, high-value fund transfers.

  • Cybercrime includes online fraud, phishing and digital identity theft.

Next Phase of Enforcement

Telangana Police have indicated that subsequent phases will involve detailed financial trail mapping, profiling of account holders and strict legal action against organised networks or institutional lapses. The initiative reflects intensified efforts to counter the rising threat of cyber-enabled financial crimes.
