India to Host Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on May 26

Overview

India will host the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi on 26 May 2026. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has invited his counterparts from Australia, Japan, and the United States. The four ministers will discuss regional and global issues. They will also review ongoing Quad projects. This is the first Quad foreign ministers’ gathering on Indian soil since 2023. The previous meeting was held in Washington, D.C., on 1 July 2025.

What Is the Quad?

The Quad is a diplomatic grouping of four countries: India, Australia, Japan, and the United States. The name comes from “Quadrilateral Security Dialogue.” The group works together on issues in the Indo-Pacific region. The Quad supports the idea of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific.” This means all countries should have freedom of navigation and peaceful development. The Quad does not have a permanent secretariat. Leaders and ministers meet regularly to discuss cooperation.

Who Is Attending the Meeting?

The meeting will be held at the invitation of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The three foreign ministers attending are:

  • Penny Wong  – Foreign Minister of Australia

  • Toshimitsu Motegi  – Foreign Minister of Japan

  • Marco Rubio  – Secretary of State of the United States

They will arrive in New Delhi for the meeting. They are also scheduled to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their stay. This shows the importance of the Quad at the highest political level.

What Will Be Discussed?

The ministers are expected to review existing Quad initiatives. They will also discuss regional and global developments of mutual concern. The listed areas of cooperation include:

  • Maritime security  – Keeping sea lanes safe and free

  • Resilient supply chains  – Making sure essential goods move without disruption

  • Infrastructure development  – Building ports, roads, and digital networks

  • Critical and emerging technologies  – Working together on 5G, AI, and semiconductors

  • Climate action  – Cooperating on clean energy and disaster resilience

  • Humanitarian assistance and disaster relief  – Helping each other during natural calamities

These are not new topics. But the ministers will review progress and set new goals.

Why Is This Meeting Important?

This meeting is important for several reasons. First, it is happening in New Delhi. Hosting the meeting gives India a chance to set the agenda. Second, the Quad has become a key platform for Indo-Pacific security. Third, the meeting comes at a time of global uncertainty. There are tensions in the South China Sea. Supply chains are still recovering from past shocks. Climate change is causing more disasters. The Quad countries want to show they are working together.
