The International Day for Biological Diversity 2026 will be observed on May 22. This year’s theme is “Acting locally for global impact.” The campaign reminds us that small actions in our own communities can help stop biodiversity loss. It also supports the global goals of the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework. Biodiversity means all living things – plants, animals, and even tiny germs. Protecting them is important for our own survival.

India Fertility Rate Drops Below 2.1 for Fifth Year: SRS 2024 Report

Overview

The 2024 Sample Registration System (SRS) report of the Office of the Registrar General of India is out. It shows a crude death rate of 6.4 deaths per thousand people. The total fertility rate is 1.9 children per woman. This is the fifth year in a row that fertility has stayed below the replacement level of 2.1. The report also gives us new data on births, deaths, and causes of death in India.

India Opens War Memorial in South Korea to Honour Korean War Heroes

Overview

On 21 May 2026, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and South Korean Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Kwon Oh-eul inaugurated the Indian War Memorial at Imjingak Park near Seoul. The memorial marks the 75th anniversary of the Korean War. It honours the service of the 60 Para Field Ambulance and the Custodian Force of India. This is a proud moment for India’s military history.

Fourth India-Africa Summit Postponed: Ebola Outbreak Delays Key Diplomatic Meeting

Overview

The Fourth India-Africa Forum Summit was scheduled for New Delhi from 28 May to 31 May 2026. But on 21 May 2026, India and the African Union decided to postpone the summit. The reason is an evolving public health situation in parts of Africa. This refers to an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The World Health Organization had already declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 16 May 2026.

NASA Space Biology Breakthroughs: Cancer, Cartilage, and Heart Stem Cells on ISS

Overview

In May 2026, NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) conducted exciting biomedical experiments. They worked on cancer treatments, cartilage tissue growth, heart stem cells, and DNA-inspired nanomaterials. All this work happened during Expedition 74. The astronauts used the Japanese Kibo laboratory module and its Life Science Glovebox. These space-based studies help us understand diseases and develop new medicines.
