World asthma day 2026: Global call to improve access and care.

Introduction: A World Health Concern.

The World Asthma Day 2026 was held on May 5. It brought to light a severe worldwide health situation. Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases. It has impact on millions of individuals of all ages.

The theme of this year was dedicated to one of the main issues. Not everybody has access to proper inhalers. These inhalers decrease the inflammation and the disease is controlled. The theme makes it clear that access is a dire need.

What is Asthma: An Easy to Understand Explanation.

Asthma is a disease of the airways. Airways swell, constrict. This renders breathing difficult.

Common symptoms include:

  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness
  • Persistent coughing

Asthma is not only concerning sudden attacks. It is a chronic disorder. It requires frequent treatment and monitoring.

Global Asthma Burden.

Asthma affects about 262 million people worldwide. It causes more than 450,000 deaths each year. Most of these deaths can be prevented.

A major concern is that most deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. This depicts a healthcare access disparity.

The impact on the day-to-day life also relates to the disease:

  • Absences at school and in the workplace.
  • Poor sleep
  • Reduced productivity

Asthma is not only a social problem but also a health problem.

Change of treatment: Global Guidelines.

In recent years, there has been a change in the care of asthma. The new international recommendations emphasize a single point. The treatment should not only be of symptoms of inflammation but the inflammation should be treated.

In the past, patients were only taking the quick-relief inhalers. They are referred to as SABA inhalers. Today, specialists recommend not to use them on their own.

New approach:

  • Take inhalers with a combination of relief and anti-inflammatory medicine.
  • Not only symptoms, but treat the root cause.

The change helps to decrease severe attacks and hospital visits.

Why Access to Inhalers Matters

Lots of patients are not able to afford the proper inhalers. This is one of the major challenges.

Problems include:

  • High cost of medicines
  • Poor supply chains
  • Lack of awareness

Consequently, patients use less effective, yet cheaper alternatives. This puts health hazards.

Access can be increased and this
