The Growing Burden of Thyroid Disorders in India and the World

History of World Thyroid Day

The idea for World Thyroid Day came in September 2007. Thyroid Federation International held a meeting and decided to create this special day. The goal was to spread awareness about thyroid health. The first World Thyroid Day was observed on 25th May 2008. Since then, every year on this date, people around the world celebrate it. The European Thyroid Association also marks the same day as European Thyroid Day. Over the years, this day has grown into an important global health event.

Common Types of Thyroid Disorders

There are several types of thyroid problems. Each one has different symptoms and treatment needs.

Hypothyroidism  – This happens when the thyroid makes too little hormone. People with this condition often feel tired all the time. They may gain weight without eating more. Other signs include dry skin, hair loss, feeling cold, depression, and a slow heart rate.

Hyperthyroidism  – This is the opposite problem. The thyroid becomes overactive and makes too much hormone. Symptoms include weight loss, fast heartbeat, anxiety, too much sweating, shaking hands, and trouble sleeping.
