Record-Setting Reticulated Python Found in Indonesia
A massive female reticulated python discovered in Indonesia has been officially recognised as the longest snake ever accurately measured. The confirmation by the Guinness World Records highlights a rare instance of precise field documentation of one of the planet’s largest reptiles.
Verified Length and Measurement Protocol
The specimen, identified as Malayopython reticulatus , measured 7.22 metres (approximately 23 feet 8 inches). The snake, popularly called “Ibu Baron,” was assessed under controlled conditions to ensure accuracy while maintaining strict animal welfare standards. Experts noted that additional extension might be possible under full muscular relaxation, but no procedures that could stress the animal were undertaken.
Discovery and Immediate Protection
The python was located in December 2025 within forested terrain in Maros County on the island of Sulawesi. Local conservationist Budi Purwanto intervened promptly to prevent harm from potential human conflict, facilitating safe containment until specialists could document the animal. His intervention ensured that the record verification process proceeded without injury to the snake.
Independent Verification by Specialists
Measurement and validation were conducted by licensed wildlife rescuer Diaz Nugraha alongside field naturalist Radu Frentiu. Documentation was subsequently reviewed and transmitted to Guinness with assistance from zoological experts, enabling independent confirmation of the record through standardised verification procedures.
Ecological Significance and Human–Wildlife Interface
Reticulated pythons are apex constrictors native to Southeast Asia and occupy a critical role in regulating prey populations. Although encounters with humans are uncommon, isolated incidents have been reported in parts of Indonesia, underscoring the need for coexistence strategies in regions where dense forests overlap with settlements. The identification of this exceptionally large individual reinforces the ecological richness of Sulawesi’s habitats.
