History: What Is the History of May 1, Labour Day?

Labour Day has its roots in the Haymarket Affair of the United States.

In 1886, an eight-hour working day was a protest by workers in Chicago. The demonstration became violent and attracted international attention. A lot of workers were killed.

To pay tribute to these workers, international labour groups in 1889 resolved to observe May 1 as the Labour Day. The day has since become a symbol of workers struggle and unity all over the world.

In 1923, Singaravelu Chettiar, a leader of labour celebrated the first Labour Day in Chennai, India.


International Labour Day 2026 Theme.

The 2026 theme announced by the International Labour Organization (ILO) is: “Ensuring a Healthy Psychosocial Working Environment.”

This theme is concerned with well-being of mind in the workplace. It highlights:
