Gyan Bharatam Mission Recognises University of Patanjali for Knowledge Preservation
The University of Patanjali has been officially designated as India’s first Yoga and Ayurveda–based Cluster Centre under the Gyan Bharatam Mission of the Ministry of Culture. The recognition represents an important milestone in the country’s efforts to preserve, document, and academically integrate India’s ancient knowledge systems through structured institutional collaboration.
Recognition Under the Gyan Bharatam Mission
The designation was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in Haridwar in the presence of Yogaguru Swami Ramdev , Vice-Chancellor Dr Acharya Balkrishna , and Gyan Bharatam Project Director Dr Anirban Dash . The Gyan Bharatam Mission aims to safeguard India’s intellectual and cultural heritage by conserving manuscripts, promoting research, and strengthening traditional knowledge systems through modern academic tools.
Role and Responsibilities of the University
As a Cluster Centre, the University of Patanjali will mentor 20 affiliated institutions across India. Its mandate includes research, education, digitisation, cataloguing, and dissemination of manuscripts related to Yoga, Ayurveda, and allied Indian traditions . The university has already built strong credentials in this field, having preserved over 50,000 ancient texts , digitised more than 42 lakh manuscript pages , and republished 40 rare manuscripts .
National Importance of the Designation
Speaking at the event, Swami Ramdev described the initiative as a step towards protecting India’s cultural identity and restoring traditional knowledge to its rightful place in global discourse. Dr Acharya Balkrishna highlighted that 33 MoUs have been signed so far under the mission, including 20 Cluster Centres , involving eight universities nationwide. The University of Patanjali is the first institution dedicated solely to Yoga and Ayurveda to receive such recognition.
Bridging Tradition and Modern Scholarship
Mission officials noted that the centre will act as a bridge between ancient wisdom and contemporary academia. Through coordinated research and mentoring, it aims to ensure that India’s Yoga and Ayurveda heritage is preserved, studied, and passed on to future generations.
