Union Cabinet Endorses Railway Multitracking Works in 19 Districts.

Introduction

The Union Cabinet has given the go-ahead to major railway multitracking projects in 19 districts in India. The decision is relevant to the development of the railway infrastructure in the country.
Railway multitracking refers to the process of providing more railway tracks on the already existing routes. These additional lines assist trains to travel at a higher speed and to minimise congestion on the busy railway section.
The project will enhance passenger services, freight traffic and general efficiency of the railways.

What Is Multitrack Railroading?

One technique that is employed to add capacity to railways is railway multitracking.
In this system:

  • A railway track (or several tracks) is added.
  • The existing busy routes receive additional lines.
  • The movement of trains is made easier.

It is primarily applied on routes where the traffic is extremely high.

Why Multitracking Is Required.

India is ranked amongst the highest railway systems in the world. Every day, millions of passengers fly. Large amounts of goods are also transported by rail.
There are numerous overcrowded railway routes. This causes:

  • Delays in trains
  • Slow freight movement
  • Operational pressure

Multitracking is the answer to these issues since it adds more capacity to the lines.

Main Objectives of the Project

The Cabinet approval is to enhance railway activities.
Key objectives include:

  • Faster train movement
  • Reduced congestion
  • Better freight transport
  • Improved passenger convenience
  • Increased network efficiency

The projects have significance in the future development of railways.

The way Multitracking enhances Railway Services.

The additional railway lines have numerous benefits.
1. Higher Train Frequency
The trains can run on the same line.
2. Better Time Management
There is less delay when using trains.
3. Separation of Traffic
Slow and fast trains can be operated independently.
4. Improved Freight Movement
The goods trains are able to move without affecting the passenger trains.
This enhances the performance of the railroad system in general.

Importance for Freight Transportation

Freight transport is very important for India’s economy.
Railways carry:

  • Coal
  • Cement
  • Food grains
  • Steel
  • Industrial goods

In cases whereby the railway lines are overcrowded, the movement of freight is slow.
