Panchayat-Level Women’s Courts to Strengthen Grassroots Justice in Tripura

The Tripura government has cleared the implementation of the Centre’s Nari Adalat scheme on a pilot basis in 10 gram panchayats covering all eight districts of the state. The decision, approved by the council of ministers, aims to reinforce village-level mechanisms for addressing women’s grievances and ensuring quicker dispute resolution.

Community-Based Justice Mechanism

The Nari Adalat initiative, led by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment , functions as a panchayat-level arbitration forum. It is designed to address issues such as domestic violence, abuse and other forms of social injustice faced by women.

The model emphasises mediation, counselling and early intervention, while facilitating police involvement in cases requiring formal legal action. Locating the forum within villages is expected to reduce procedural barriers and encourage women to seek timely support.

Structure and Operational Framework

Each Nari Adalat will consist of up to nine members selected for their credibility and standing within the community. These members will guide mediation proceedings, provide counselling and connect aggrieved women to institutional services when necessary.

The pilot phase will allow the state to assess the model’s effectiveness before considering statewide expansion.

Statewide Representation

By selecting gram panchayats from all eight districts, the government intends to ensure balanced regional coverage. The initiative also seeks to strengthen decentralised governance by empowering local bodies to address social issues more effectively.
