Bangladesh Political Transition: New Government Formed Under Tarique Rahman
Five days after Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections, Tarique Rahman , chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) , was sworn in as the new Prime Minister on 17 February 2026. The oath of office was administered by Mohammed Shahabuddin , marking the formal transfer of power following a decisive electoral mandate for the BNP-led alliance.
Formation of the New Government
Prime Minister Rahman will head a large Council of Ministers comprising 25 cabinet ministers and 24 ministers of state. The swearing-in followed the oath-taking of newly elected Members of Parliament at the Jatiya Sangsad , administered by the Chief Election Commissioner. The cabinet blends senior party leaders with technocrats, reflecting an attempt to balance political experience with administrative expertise.
Key portfolios include Finance, Home, Energy, Foreign Affairs, Culture and Religious Affairs. Notably, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, previously National Security Adviser, has been appointed Foreign Minister, signalling continuity in Bangladesh’s external diplomacy, particularly on regional and humanitarian issues.
Diplomatic Engagement and Regional Signals
Soon after assuming office, Prime Minister Rahman met visiting dignitaries, including Om Birla , who conveyed an invitation from Narendra Modi to visit India. The presence of foreign delegates underscored international interest in Bangladesh’s political transition.
Return After Prolonged Exile
At 60, Tarique Rahman’s ascent marks a significant comeback after more than 17 years in exile. His return in December 2025 followed the political upheaval that ended Sheikh Hasina’s long rule, reshaping Bangladesh’s governance landscape.
