IIT Jodhpur Develops Flexible Sensors for Real-Time Health Monitoring

Wearable Semiconductor Technology for Early Disease Detection

Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur are developing advanced flexible semiconductor sensors for continuous health monitoring and early disease detection. The work is being conducted at the HESTECH Lab, focusing on next-generation wearable devices capable of real-time physiological and biochemical tracking.


Next-Generation Wearable Technology

The project focuses on soft, flexible, and intelligent semiconductor devices that can comfortably adhere to the human body for extended periods. These sensors can monitor vital parameters such as heart rate, muscle activity, body temperature, and skin pressure. The goal is to enable continuous health monitoring beyond hospital settings, improving early diagnosis and preventive care.


Role of Organic Electrochemical Transistors

A key innovation lies in the use of Organic Electrochemical Transistors (OECTs). These devices are highly compatible with biological systems and can detect both electrical signals and biochemical markers. This dual capability allows simultaneous monitoring of vital signs and disease-related biomarkers through a single flexible platform.


Applications in Healthcare and Diagnostics

The technology has significant potential in early disease detection by analysing biomarkers in biofluids such as saliva, blood, and serum. It supports point-of-care diagnostics in rural health camps, dental clinics, and mobile healthcare units. Wearable solutions like ECG patches, EMG sensors, and pressure ulcer detection systems are also being developed.


Potential in Defence and Extreme Environments

Beyond healthcare, these sensors can be integrated into wearable systems for defence personnel. They can monitor stress, fatigue, dehydration, and heat exposure in real time, enhancing operational efficiency and safety in extreme conditions.
