Sloth Bear Spotted in Shivamogga Important Information About This Bear

Captured Sloth Bear near Shivamogga Airport in Karnataka

Forest officials have recently spotted a Sloth Bear in the villages around Shivamogga airport in Karnataka. This situation reflects growing conflicts between humans and animals due to increasing development around forest areas.

Characteristics of Sloth Bear

As the name suggests, the sloth bear belongs to the bear family and is one of the eight bear species existing in the world. They are indigenous to the Indian subcontinent. This bear primarily survives on insects like ants and termites, hence being called a myrmecophagous animal. These bears are vital for maintaining ecological balance.

Distinct Physical Features of Sloth Bears

Like other bears, the sloth bear is covered with shaggy black or dark brown fur. Their claws are also long and curved. Additionally, they are sometimes referred to as labiated bears because they have elongated lips which help them suck insects easily. They usually stay active during nighttime and take rest during the day inside caves or thick bushes.

Preferred Habitat and Distribution

This species lives in forests and grasslands with sufficient cover including shrubs, rocky areas and tall trees. They can be found in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Some significant locations where they live in India include Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary of Karnataka state and Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary of Gujarat.
