Overview
On 11 May 2026, two big Indian councils came together. They are the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). They launched a new programme called SEHAT. SEHAT stands for Science Excellence for Health through Agricultural Transformation. The goal is to use farming to improve people's health. The focus is on stopping diseases before they start. This is a national mission. It will help with malnutrition and common illnesses like diabetes. This topic is useful for UPSC, SSC, and health exams.
What Is SEHAT?
SEHAT is a joint programme. ICMR and ICAR launched it on 11 May 2026 in New Delhi. The full name is Science Excellence for Health through Agricultural Transformation. It is a mission-mode programme. That means the government gives it high priority. SEHAT connects farming research with health results.
Why Was SEHAT Launched?
India has two big health problems. One is malnutrition (not getting enough nutrients). The other is non-communicable diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancer. SEHAT wants to move from curative healthcare (treating sickness) to preventive healthcare (stopping sickness before it starts).
What Are the Key Focus Areas?
SEHAT works on five main things:
-
Biofortified crops (crops with extra nutrients)
-
Integrated farming systems (combining crops, animals, and fish on one farm)
-
Occupational health of farm workers (keeping farmers healthy)
-
One Health preparedness (linking human, animal, and environment health)
-
Fighting malnutrition and non-communicable diseases
What Is Biofortification?
Biofortification means making crops more nutritious. Farmers and scientists do this through breeding or other farming methods. ICAR has already developed 203 biofortified crop varieties. Now under SEHAT, ICMR will help test these crops through clinical trials. This will prove if they really make people healthier.
What Is Integrated Farming System?
It is a way of farming. On the same piece of land, a farmer grows crops, raises animals, keeps fish, and does other activities. This gives more food and income. It also keeps the soil healthy. SEHAT promotes this method.
What Is One Health?
One Health is a big idea. It says human health, animal health, and environment health are all linked. If animals get sick, humans can get sick too. If the environment is dirty, everyone suffers. SEHAT includes One Health preparedness to stop future outbreaks.
How Will SEHAT Help Ordinary People?
Farmers will get healthier crops to grow. People will get more nutritious food to eat. This will reduce diseases like diabetes and heart problems. Farm workers will get safety training. The whole system will focus on preventing illness, not just treating it.
