Fifth Rüsoma Orange Festival Kicks Off in Nagaland
The fifth edition of the Rüsoma Orange Festival was inaugurated today at Rüsoma village, located about 10 kilometres from Kohima, reinforcing Nagaland’s efforts to link horticulture with rural prosperity. The event celebrates the success of orange cultivation as both an economic driver and a cultural marker for the village.
Theme and Developmental Focus
Organised under the theme “Abundance of Rüsoma” , the two-day festival focuses on strengthening village welfare through agriculture-led development. It aims to encourage rural entrepreneurship, honour the dedication of local farmers, and promote the unique quality of Rüsoma oranges, which have gained recognition for their flavour and consistency.
Boosting Local Culture and Village Enterprise
The festival serves as a vibrant platform for community interaction, featuring cultural performances, indigenous games, and exhibition stalls. Visitors can explore counters selling traditional cuisine, fast food, orange saplings, and locally produced goods. These activities support self-help groups and small entrepreneurs, while also promoting agri-tourism and showcasing village-based economic models.
Orange Cultivation as a Community Backbone
Orange farming has emerged as the cornerstone of Rüsoma’s rural economy. Currently, around 470 of the village’s 570 households are directly involved in citrus cultivation.
