India Launches Carbon Market Portal at Prakriti 2026 Summit
The International Conference on Carbon Markets— Prakriti 2026 commenced in New Delhi as a major initiative of the Government of India. Organised by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency under the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the event forms part of the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 and brings together global stakeholders to discuss climate solutions.
Theme and Strategic Focus
The conference theme, “Unlocking Carbon Finance for NDC Implementation through Global Partnerships and Digital Pathways,” highlights India’s focus on climate finance and digital innovation. Discussions centre on strengthening global cooperation and improving digital systems to meet emission reduction targets under Paris Agreement commitments.
Launch of Indian Carbon Market Portal
A major highlight was the launch of the Indian Carbon Market Portal by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Minister of State Shripad Naik. The portal serves as a central platform for managing India’s carbon trading system, ensuring transparency, efficient monitoring, and easier participation for industries.
Carbon Credit Trading Scheme Progress
India has operationalised the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), with multiple approved methodologies and numerous registered entities across sectors such as biogas, hydrogen, and forestry. Around 490 energy-intensive entities have been assigned emission targets, promoting measurable and verifiable reductions.
Key Pillars and Global Significance
The conference emphasises three core pillars of carbon markets: credibility through digital monitoring and verification, mobilisation of capital for clean technologies, and international collaboration under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. It also addresses compliance frameworks, carbon border measures, and the inclusion of MSMEs and farmers in climate action.
