Padma Awards 2026 Highlight Grassroots Environmental Heroes Across India

Padma Awards 2026 Shine a Light on Grassroots Environmental Conservation

India’s Padma Awards 2026 have brought national attention to grassroots environmental conservation, recognising individuals whose lifelong efforts quietly transformed local ecosystems. Among the awardees are elderly activists and community leaders who worked outside institutional frameworks, proving that sustained, people-driven action can deliver powerful ecological outcomes.

Devaki Amma’s Green Transformation in Coastal Kerala

One of the most inspiring awardees is Kollakkayil Devaki Amma G , a 92-year-old environmentalist from Alappuzha district, Kerala , who has been conferred the Padma Shri . Over several decades, she single-handedly converted barren, sandy coastal land into a flourishing green landscape.

Her afforestation work resulted in the growth of more than 3,000 varieties of indigenous, rare and medicinal plants . The dense vegetation not only restored biodiversity but also improved soil quality, reduced erosion, and moderated local climatic conditions. Her efforts stand as a living model of low-cost, long-term ecological restoration rooted in patience and commitment.

Environmental Leadership from Eastern and Northeastern India

The Padma list also recognises conservationists from ecologically sensitive regions of eastern and northeastern India.

  • Gambir Singh Yonzone from Darjeeling, West Bengal , an educationist and founder of the Himalaya Science Association , has been honoured for his contribution to environmental education and Himalayan conservation. His work played a role in the establishment of Singalila National Park and Neora Valley National Park , both crucial biodiversity reserves in the eastern Himalayas.

  • From Meghalaya , social worker Hally War received the Padma Shri for reviving the traditional Khasi living root bridges in Cherrapunji. These bridges, grown from the roots of rubber fig trees, are unique examples of bio-engineering and sustainable infrastructure. War’s work helped preserve indigenous knowledge while training local families in conservation-friendly practices.

Conservation Efforts in Central India

Environmental action from central India was also recognised through Mohan Nagar of Madhya Pradesh , who was awarded the Padma Shri for landscape and water conservation. His initiatives include developing around 75 Tapti Upvans , constructing nearly 75,000 water-harvesting structures , and planting native tree species across degraded hills. These efforts improved groundwater recharge, reduced land degradation, and promoted sustainable use of natural resources.
