Operation Shastra: Delhi Police Steps Up Action Against Online Intimidation

Targeting digital intimidation and criminal signalling

The Delhi Police has rolled out a citywide enforcement drive named Operation Shastra to curb the misuse of social media for spreading fear and projecting criminal dominance. The initiative focuses on individuals who upload images with weapons or post abusive and threatening content online, practices that authorities say often translate into real-world law and order risks.

Focus on fear-mongering via online platforms

The operation was announced by Joint Commissioner of Police (Southern Range) S. K. Jain, who said the primary objective is to discourage attempts at creating intimidation through digital platforms. Police officials noted that such online behaviour is increasingly being used to assert influence, threaten rivals, or instil fear among the public, making it a growing challenge for urban policing.

Coordinated citywide mobilisation

Operation Shastra involved a large and synchronised deployment, with over 500 police teams and more than 2,000 personnel participating at the same time across Delhi. This coordinated approach enabled rapid monitoring, verification, and on-ground follow-up of suspicious online activity within a short operational window.

FIRs, arrests and enforcement outcomes

During the drive, police teams examined more than 6,000 social media profiles flagged for potential violations. Based on evidence collected, 61 First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered under applicable legal provisions. Follow-up action led to the apprehension of 83 accused persons , marking a significant step against the misuse of digital platforms for intimidation.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Preventive policing increasingly relies on social media surveillance

  • FIRs may be registered under the IPC or Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita

  • Cyber monitoring is now integrated with conventional policing

  • Preventive operations aim to stop crime before physical incidents occur

Preventive policing and public safety approach

Senior officials said Operation Shastra reflects a broader preventive policing strategy adopted by the Delhi Police to address emerging digital threats. By acting decisively against online weapon displays and abusive conduct, the police aim to deter criminal posturing, reduce fear among citizens, and reinforce the message that misuse of social media will attract firm legal consequences.
